And you usually find the problem after delivery, once the goods have crossed the world and paid duty.

The two sites are both owned by Alibaba Group and often list the same factories. The difference is who they're built for. Alibaba.com is designed for foreign businesses and handles English, international payment and export paperwork. 1688 is built for Chinese buyers, so an agent has to buy for you — but the price is the one a Chinese shop pays.

• Check years on the platform and response rate. Both are shown on the supplier profile and say more about a supplier than polished photos do.
• Put specs in writing. Size chart, material, colour codes and packaging, attached to the order.
• Recheck the row. If a spreadsheet row is months old, message the supplier to confirm price and MOQ before relying on it.

How to build a supplier spreadsheet that stays useful

A shared supplier list goes stale fast: stores close, prices move, MOQs change. If you keep your own, these columns do most of the work:

1. Store name and listing link — the full product address, not a search result.
2. MOQ and price tiers — the headline price is often the highest-quantity tier.
3. Sample cost and date — what you paid for a sample, and when you checked it.
4. Lead time — production days quoted, then the real number once an order ships.
